Tommy Fury vs. Roy Jones Jr? John Fury says “maybe”

After beating both Jake Paul and KSI, Tommy Fury is reportedly in talks to face former boxing champion Roy Jones Jr. Jones is currently 54 years old and dropped a fight to Anthony Pettis back in April.

The idea has been first floated by the Saudis after the Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou fight after the two met at the event. The fight was mentioned by John Fury, Tommy’s father and manager. “We’re speaking to Roy Jones Jr. We can do something with him.” Fury continued to Free Bets UK, “I’m giving it some thought at the time of speaking. Roy Jones Jr. is a great guy. He’s a lovely fella, a stand up man and hall 0f fame great.”

The unorthodox rise of Tommy Fury

Unlike his brother, Tyson Fury, Tommy Fury’s rise to prominence has been in unorthodox ways. Born into the boxing family, Fury made an appearance on ITV2’s Love Island, a reality television dating game show. After going 8-0, Fury snagged a fight with the infamous Jake Paul, a fight which he won via split decision. He then returned to beat Paul’s rival KSI via unanimous decision in October.

Tommy Fury was lauded as not taking boxing seriously and a side attraction for him. After beating Paul and KSI, he garnered a lot of attention due to the size of the YouTuber’s platforms.

Roy Jones Jr. truly needs no introduction. He is a four weight champion in the boxing and is one of the sports most exciting fighters. He was famously robbed of a gold medal in the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.

Jones’ resume is as deep as it is wide. With a 66-10 record, he has names on his resume including Bernard Hopkins, James Toney, and Antonio Tarver. In July of 2020, Jones returned to action in an exhibition bout with Mike Tyson, a fight that got away when both were in their primes. After retiring in 2018, Roy Jones Jr. took on former UFC champion Anthony Pettis and lost via majority decision.

Tommy Fury vs. Roy Jones Jr. may be a long shot but perhaps the fact that John Fury is talking about the fight means its further along than we believe.
