Gilbert Burns defeats Jorge Masvidal in UFC 287 co-main event, Gamebred retires following bout

Gilbert Burns apologizes for accusing Jorge Masvidal of greasing at UFC 287

UFC welterweight contender Gilbert Burns apologized for accusing rival Jorge Masvidal of greasing in their recent fight at UFC 287.

Burns used his wrestling skills to control Masvidal and win a unanimous decision over him in the co-main event of UFC 287. After the fight, Burns spoke to the media at the post-fight press conference and revealed that the reason he couldn’t finish the fight is that Masvidal was greasing. According to Burns, he believed that Masvidal had applied a lotion to his skin earlier in the day, and when he started sweating during the fight, the lotion came out and made his skin slippery, which made it difficult for Burns to control him on the ground.

However, a few days later, and now Burns is walking back the accusations. Taking to his social media, “Durinho” apologized to Masvidal, saying he had no proof that his opponent was doing anything illegal, and that he wanted to wish him well in his MMA retirement.

“I just would like to take a moment to apologize to Jorge ‘Gamebred’ Masvidal and his team at ATT on the things I said after the fight at the press-fight conference at UFC 287. I said that he passed lotion and this and that, and it was too much. I can’t prove that, and I would like to apologize to send my apologies to Jorge and his team and take everything that I said. I hope that he accepts my apologies and I think what I did was wrong. I have no proof that he did that. I want to take nothing away from him. That guy is a warrior, 52 professional fights. I hope that he has a good retirement and I hope he accepts my apology,” Burns said (h/t MMAjunkie.com).
