Gilbert Burns calls for Jorge Masvidal fight at UFC 287 to be for BMF belt, ‘Gamebred’ shoots request down

The BMF belt will not be up for grabs when Gilbert Burns and Jorge Masvidal meet at UFC 287.

On Friday, Dana White announced Burns would be facing Masvidal in the co-main event of UFC 287 in a massive fight for both men. Although it is already a big fight, Burns was hoping to make it even bigger by having it five rounds for the BMF title, which Masvidal won with a UFC 244 doctor stoppage win over Nate Diaz.

Come on @danawhite April 8 has to be 5 rounds! Put that belt on the line! Everybody knows It’s only one guy in the @ufc that fights ANYONE! #ufc287,” Burns tweeted.

Many fans immediately agreed with Burns that the fight should be for the BMF belt, but Masvidal had said only his fight against Diaz was for the BMF belt. With that, he says UFC 287 won’t be for the BMF belt as the UFC isn’t paying him like the BMF title fight is on the line.

“[If] they pay me BMF money, which the UFC ain’t going to up it up for more money, so sorry Gilbert,” Masvidal said on The MMA Hour. “I already got my contract. I already signed my s***. I could give a f*** less.”

The downside of not having the BMF title up for grabs is the fact this fight is a three-rounder, but Jorge Masvidal says that is enough time for him. He is confident in his skills that he will finish Burns in get back in the title picture.

“Three rounds is more than enough that I need for Gilbert,” Masvidal said. “I like all the publicity and extra that he’s putting into it, but brother, three rounds is all I need for that.”

Jorge Masvidal (35-16) is on a three-fight losing skid having dropped a decision to Colby Covington last time out. Prior to that, he suffered back-to-back losses to Kamaru Usman for the belt, with the second loss coming by KO.
