ONE Championship is hoping that the third time’s the charm for this world championship bout booking. December 2020 and October of this year were the two previously targeted timeframes for a Kryklia vs Aygun clash.
In the initial attempt, Kryklia’s coach tested positive for COVID-19. Aygun withdrew from the sophomore booking attempt on October 29th, 2021.
A follow up attempt to position Kryklia against Iraj Azizpour for that ONE: Next Gen show in late October ultimately fell off. This derailing came from the champion pulling out due to a medical condition that was not disclosed.
ONE Light Heavyweight Kickboxing title
The January 14th clash at ONE: Heavy Hitters offers early insights for the company’s plans. A look into what ONE Championship is offering up for their first quarter programming for the upcoming calendar year.
Roman Kryklia is the inaugural ONE light heavyweight kickboxing world champion and has held the belt since November 2019. He looks to make the sophomore defense of his crown as he is two years into his reign now.
Kryklia’s last foray into the ONE Circle saw him carve out his first title defense. This came via unanimous decision against Andrei Stoica in the main event of ONE: Collision Course on December 18th, 2020.
Murat Aygun is the former ISKA super heavyweight world champion and former WFL heavyweight world champion. He is now looking for gold in a different promotion in a different weight category altogether.
Aygun was last in action on December 4th, 2020 when he bested Anderson Silva at ONE: Big Bang. The unanimous decision win came against the replacement Silva after Kryklia’s aforementioned reasoning for dropping off of that event.
What are your thoughts on Kryklia vs Aygun for the ONE Light Heavyweight Kickboxing title in early 2022?
