The Unexpected Challenges of Dating as an Expat

Moving abroad is supposed to be an adventure. New places, new people, new experiences and, potentially, a new romance. What nobody mentions is that dating in another country can feel like learning an entirely new set of rules while trying to look good.

For expats in Brazil, the possibilities are exciting. But between language barriers, different expectations and the fact that everyone seems to have a different plan for where they’ll be living next year, romance can become quite complicated.

Flirting in a Second Language

There’s a big difference between knowing enough Portuguese to order dinner and knowing enough to be charming over dinner.

You might be perfectly capable of discussing your job or asking for directions, but flirting involves humour, tone, timing and the occasional double meaning. Those are considerably harder to master in another language.

Even people who speak Portuguese well can miss a joke or misunderstand a subtle hint. And relying on translation apps isn’t always helpful. Nothing interrupts a romantic conversation quite like stopping to check whether you’ve accidentally said something about someone’s grandmother.

The good news is that a little awkwardness can be endearing. Being willing to laugh at your mistakes often matters more than having flawless grammar.

The Dating Rules Aren’t Always the Same

Dating customs can vary between countries, social circles and individuals. Someone accustomed to fairly reserved British dating habits might find the Brazilian approach more expressive or direct, although there’s obviously no single way that Brazilians date.

Questions about exclusivity, meeting friends or introducing someone to family can also come with different expectations.

The safest approach is not to assume that a familiar gesture means exactly the same thing everywhere. A little curiosity and an honest conversation can prevent a surprising amount of confusion.

And if you’re wondering whether something counts as a date, asking is generally more reliable than conducting a three-hour dissection with your friends.

The Expat Dating Bubble

Moving abroad often means building a social circle from scratch. Expat groups, language exchanges and dating apps can make meeting people easier, particularly during the first few months.

But it’s possible to end up socialising almost entirely with other foreigners. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially when you’re new and looking for familiar company. It can, however, limit your opportunities to connect with the wider community.

Learning the language, developing local interests and making friends outside expat circles can open up a much broader social life.

It also means your dating prospects don’t depend entirely on whoever happens to attend the next international networking evening.

The Expiry Date Nobody Talks About

Here’s a problem that’s particularly common in expat relationships: you meet someone you really like, and then one of you announces they’re moving to another country.

Perhaps a British professional in Rio starts dating someone from Argentina. Everything is going well until one receives a job offer in Lisbon and the other starts considering a move back to Buenos Aires.

Suddenly, a perfectly good relationship involves three countries, two career plans and a spreadsheet.

Some expats intend to settle permanently, while others are studying, working on temporary contracts or exploring different places. Even people who originally planned to stay can change their minds.

That makes the question “How long are you staying?” unusually important. It might sound like small talk on a first date, but six months later it could determine whether the relationship has a future.

When Intimacy Has to Travel Too

When one person moves, couples have to find new ways to stay close. Video dates, voice messages and regular calls can help maintain a connection, although arranging a romantic evening across several time zones requires a certain amount of organisation.

Intimacy can become part of those conversations too. Some couples enjoy private calls and flirtatious messages when they can’t be together physically.

Single adults may make different choices. For those interested in private adult entertainment without pursuing a new relationship, services offering phone sex provide an option for voice-based interaction. That’s distinct from maintaining a relationship, but it reflects the variety of ways adults can enjoy personal connections and entertainment over the phone.

Of course, technology can’t make every long-distance arrangement work. Eventually, the question of where both people want to live still needs an answer.

Stay, Follow or Say Goodbye?

At some point, many international couples face a decision. Does one person relocate? Do both choose a new destination? Or do they accept that their plans are taking them in different directions?

There’s no universal answer, and a relationship doesn’t have to end badly simply because two people want different things.

Dating abroad can bring wonderful experiences, unexpected friendships and relationships that might never have happened back home. But it also requires flexibility, honest conversations and occasionally a willingness to make difficult choices.

The biggest challenge isn’t always finding someone you like in a new country.

It’s finding someone you like who plans to remain in the same country as you.
