Is Vitor Belfort Truly Retiring After UFC 224?

Vitor Belfort says Roy Jones Jr. ‘accepted’ his challenge

Vitor Belfort is the newest ex-UFC fighter to sign with Singapore-based promotion, ONE Championship. And, it appears Belfort knows who he wants to fight first and that is ex-boxer Roy Jones Jr.

“One fight that I’d really like, I told Chatri [Sityodtong] I’d really like to put on this fight, is me vs. Roy Jones Jr.,” Belfort said. “So Roy, wherever you are, I want to come challenge you for a boxing match — but with this condition. I’m going to be able to dirty box with you.

“I won’t be able to kick you, but I will be able to dirty box with you. I’m going to be in your face the whole time so it’s going to be a different boxing match. So that would be a very fun thing to do.”

For many fans, they didn’t understand the callout, but Jones Jr. and Belfort now apparently are going back-and-forth ready to fight each other. And, Belfort posted on Instagram that he received a call that Jones Jr. officially accepted the challenge and the fight will happen soon.

“I was in the middle of filming for an upcoming project (which I’m excited to share with you all soon) when I got the official response from [Roy Jones Jr.] so I thought I would share that little moment with you all,” Belfort said. “I am very excited for what’s to come with [ONE Championship] and this upcoming fight. I’m even more excited to be the first to bring you this new way of competition, it allows for the 1st time different worlds to collide in a way that’s fair and exciting! Thank you for  accepting Roy and I am looking forward to this fight!”

Belfort last fought back in May of 2018 at UFC 224 where he lost to Lyoto Machida by knockout. The 41-year-old in Belfort has one professional boxing experience back in 2006 where Belfort won the fight. Jones Jr., meanwhile, is 66-9 as a professional boxer but the 50-year-old hasn’t fought since February of 2018.

There has been no official announcement, but if what Belfort is saying is true, the two should enter a boxing ring soon.
