Christos Giagos details a dominating performance on 3 days notice
“I can beat this guy.”
The immediate thoughts of Christos Giagos when he found out he’d be taking on Carlton Minus in a short notice bout last weekend at UFC Fight Night: Thompson vs Neal. Living to his expectations, “The Spartan” Giagos did just that, dominating Minus in the bout from the opening bell with his superior grappling. “The Spartan” entered this fight as the favorite, even taking the fight on 3 days notice and didn’t disappoint. Now, the promising lightweight finds himself back in the win column and moving into 2021 with his momentum racing.
Coming off of successful neck surgery, and a scrapped fight in April, Giagos was beginning to wonder if he may sit the entire year of 2020 on the sidelines. Coming from a family full of relentlessly dedicated workers, sitting an entire year out wasn’t appeasing to Giagos.
“I knew if I had passed this opportunity, I would’ve been mad at myself, it would’ve ate at me and whether I was ready or not, it was better to take it (the fight) and find out then not take it and let it sit and rot inside.”
With 2020 shaping up to be an extremely difficult year for anyone to maintain a routine schedule, Giagos felt prepared with the work he had been putting in for these very situations. His manager telling previously explaining, “we can get you in sooner but just get ready and we can take a short-notice fight if the opportunity comes.”
He received the call on Wednesday, December 16th, merely 3 days before fight night. I knew I could beat that guy anywhere,” Giagos says. “I was like I’m not gonna strike with him because I’m not gonna play his game. I know I can beat him at my game. I am very blessed because if I fight ground guys I can keep it standing. If I fight stand up guys, I can take them down so I’m pretty well rounded and I think you have to be in this sport if you want to stay.” Giagos explains.
