Colby Covington breaks foot at UFC 296 – Thoughts and Reaction

Colby Covington is back in the news as he revealed today that he broke his foot in the first round of his UFC 296 title fight with Leon Edwards.

The always outspoken Covington shared the news with Submission radio on Tuesday and he said the broken foot played a role in his loss to Edwards.

“The result wasn’t what I wanted, it wasn’t my night,” Covington said. “I broke my foot right away, and I couldn’t plant or explode off it to use the wrestling and pressure I planned to use. I didn’t want to disclose this information until I had the x-rays.”

He also made sure to get a shout out in to all of the people who hate him by saying he knows that they’ll be making fun of him.

Haters will still find a way to hate on me for fighting 25 minutes on one leg while landing over a hundred strikes more than Leon!” said Covington.

With the news breaking today, here’s some thought and a reaction to the news which can also be seen in the video above.

Leon Edwards dominated Colby Covington at UFC 296

Broken foot or not, Edwards clearly won the fight and he did it with ease.

Covington is tough as nails for fighting through the injury and it probably did impact his performance, but at the end of the day, it was a lopsided contest.

Even with the news of Covington’s foot, I doubt the UFC is sitting in their matchmaking meetings saying that they need to rebook the fight.

Colby Covington will still miss time

Covington isn’t know for being active and if he wants another title shot he’s going to have to be active and win some fights.

That isn’t going to happen in the blink of an eye as this injury will require him to be sidelined.

Once its healed and he can fully return to training and competing at a level, then we can worry about who, what, when, why and where is next.

There are big fights out there for Colby Covington

Ian Garry, Gilbert Burns and Belal Muhammad sound like fun matchups for Covington. Then there’s also Kamaru Usman, who he beat Covington in two very closely contested fights.

Who knows, maybe once his injured is healed, there could be a case for an Edwards rematch, but a lot would have to happen to see that.

One important note here is that while they are all fun matchups, they are also difficult one’s for Covington.

Overall Thoughts

The UFC isn’t in a hurry to rebook Edwards and Covington so some new blood is in store for all parties involved.

When Covington fights the UFC makes money as his villain role makes good business. Hopefully he has a speedy recovery and we can see some great hyped up fights in the hopefully near future.
