Joaquin Buckley stops Vicente Luque in round two of UFC Atlantic City co-main event

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, March 30, 2024, for UFC Atlantic City, going down live from Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Headlining the event is a title eliminator bout in the flyweight division between no. 2 ranked Erin Blanchfield (12-1) and no. 3 ranked Manon Fiorot (11-1).

Co-headlining the event was a welterweight encounter between no. 11 ranked Vicente Luque (22-10-1) and Joaquin Buckley (18-6).

Following a 14-2 run across 16 UFC fights from 2015 to 2021, Luque would lose his next two-straight contests before coming into tonight’s co-main event off a win over former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos last August.

Buckley on the other hand, following a 5-3 run up at 185 lbs, dropped down to 170 lbs last year in 2023 and had gone 2-0 since.

Official Result: Joaquin Buckley def. Vicente Luque via TKO (punches) at 3:17 of round two

Buckley showed off good boxing throughout the opening round, cutting a lot of angles and letting go on combinations, though he missed on many of them.

Luque continued to have a hard time finding his range in round two, Buckley of which found his and began to land some heavy shots on him. Buckley landed a heavy left hand before attempting a flying knee, coming up short but just barely.

Luque shot in on a double leg, but fell to his back once he realized he wasn’t going to secure it, which is quite uncharacteristic of him. He fell into half guard, before regaining his guard, where Buckley reigned down heavy punches leading up to the TKO finish.

Joaquin Buckley remains undefeated as a UFC welterweight, becoming just the second man to ever stop Vicente Luque with strikes.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
