Report: Robert Whittaker vs. Darren Till Being Targeted For UFC Dublin

Dublin, Ireland may be getting an explosive UFC middleweight main event.

According to a report from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, the promotion is working on finalizing a bout between Robert Whittaker (20-5) and Darren Till (18-2-1) to headline a UFC Fight Night on Aug. 15 in Dublin.

Whittaker, the former UFC middleweight champion, went on a tear after moving up to 185 pounds in 2014, winning six-straight fights including four by way of finish. The now 29-year-old Australian then beat Yoel Romero in July 2017 to win the division’s interim title, though he was later promoted to undisputed champion.

Over the course of his career, injuries have unfortunately held him back a bit, but he returned in June 2018 to win a rematch against Romero in what was deemed a non-title bout due to “The Soldier of God” missing weight. Then in October of this past year, Whittaker surrendered his title after being stopped in the second round by Israel Adesanya at UFC 243.

Most recently, “The Reaper” was scheduled to make his return to action against Jared Cannonier at last week’s UFC 248, but he was forced to pull out due to personal reasons.

Moving onto Till, the brash and outspoken 27-year-old southpaw from Liverpool made a name for himself by going 5-0-1 in the UFC’s welterweight division from 2015-18. He then earned a title shot against Tyron Woodley at UFC 228, but was thoroughly outclassed by “The Chosen One”.

Following the loss to Woodley, Till suffered yet another devastating defeat, falling victim to Jorge Masvidal in London last year. He then decided it what was time to move up in weight after years of depleting his body to make the 170-pound limit and scored a decision victory over Kelvin Gastelum this past November.

The event will mark the UFC’s first trip to Ireland since November 2016.
