UFC Tampa results: Cub Swanson outlasts Kron Gracie in 15 minute slugfest
On Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019, the UFC returned to Florida for UFC on ESPN+ 19.
The event took place at Amalie Arena in Tampa and was headlined by a women’s strawweight bout between Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Michelle Waterson.
In the co-main event of the evening, a featherweight matchup between veteran Cub Swanson and the surging Kron Gracie took place. Swanson entered the fight looking to snap a four-fight losing streak, and pick up his first win since defeating Artem Lobov in the main event of UFC Fight Night 108 in April 2017.
Gracie has finished all five of his fights by submission, four of those in the first round. The 31-year-old made his UFC debut in February at UFC on ESPN 1 against Alex Caceres, finishing the fight in just over two minutes via rear naked choke.

ROUND 1
They meet in the center and Swanson moving well as Gracie stalks forward. Swanson lands a left hand. Gracie lands a right hand of his own. Leg kick from Gracie, right hand counter from Swanson. Straight right from Swanson as Gracie is trying to close the distance. Body shot from Swanson, Gracie counters. Swanson circles back to his left and lands a nice right hand. Gracie continues to push forward and Swanson lands another clean right hand. Swanson lands a combination and a hard body kick. Leg kick and a combination, followed by a hard body shot by Swanson. Great start for the veteran as Gracie continues to stalk his opponent. Swanson jumps in with a right hand and a leg kick. Body shot from Swanson, and another. Gracie lands a right hand that caught Swanson’s attention. Right hand from Gracie as he tries to smother Swanson against the fence. Swanson is able to find open space and continues to land. Another hard shot to the body from Swanson. Final 10 seconds and Swanson lands another right hand and a hard body kick. The horn sounds. Great start for the veteran.

ROUND 2
Gracie stalks Swanson to start the round. Swanson lands a hard left hand, followed by a combination. Big right hand to the body from Swanson. Gracie with a right hand, Swanson answers with a quick jab. Straight right from Swanson as Gracie looks to grab a hold of his opponent. Swanson back to the body and Gracie finally gets a hold of him. Swanson throws a barrage of short punches to separate. Gracie grabs him again and looks to pull guard. Swanson able to separate and land a ferocious body shot, and again. Another hard body shot from Swanson. Gracie almost gets Swanson down again but he’s able to get back up. They clinch up again and Swanson shoves him away. Big right hand from Swanson. Gracie clinches up and lands a short uppercut. Swanson lands a looping left and right. Gracie is right in Swanson’s face and is landing himself. Right hand from Gracie. Swanson lands a big right hand in the clinch. Left hand from Swanson and ducks under. Swanson with a jab and Gracie answers with a combination. They trade punches and clinch up, Swanson lands short right hands. Final 10 seconds and Gracie lands a pair of jabs to close the round. Gracie gained some steam, but Swanson has looked good for the first 10 minutes.

ROUND 3
Swanson lands to the body as both guys come out swinging. Gracie pushing forward and Swanson lands a nice counter right hand. They clinch up and Swanson is able to escape the grasp of Gracie. Swanson with a combination, followed by a body kick and a left hand. Right hook from Swanson lands and they clinch up in the center. Gracie tries to jump guard and Swanson slips away. Gracie clinches again and Swanson separates, unloads with a combination. Gracie tries to throw Swanson, but the veteran is able to avoid getting taken down completely. Swanson lands again to the body. Gracie on his back throws a big upkick — imagine that? They tie up again and Swanson lands a knee to the body. This fight is so grueling! Gracie with a left hand, Swanson back to the body, back to the top. Swanson with a series of jabs. This is more like a hockey fight now. Both guys are bloody messes with under a minute. They get to the mat and Swanson is in the full guard of Gracie. Swanson needs to be very careful, but he gets back to his feet and they slug away in the clinch. Under 10 seconds to go, Swanson lands a spinning back kick to the body. Incredible fight!
