Bill Algeo, UFC Vegas 80

Bill Algeo improves to 4-1 over last five with victory over Alexander Hernandez at UFC Vegas 80

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, October 7, 2023, for UFC Vegas 80, going down live from the UFC Apex in Enterprise, Nevada.

Headlining the event is a lightweight affair between no. 10 ranked Grant Dawson (20-1-1) and longtime 155 lb staple Bobby Green (30-14-1).

Co-headlining the event is a welterweight bout showcasing a pair of knockout artists in Joe Pyfer (11-2) and Abdul Razak Alhassan (12-5).

Our feature fight of the evening also came in the welterweight division, this one between Joaquin Buckley (16-6) and Alex Morono (23-8).

Opening up the main card was a featherweight bout between Alexander Hernandez (14-7) and Bill Algeo (18-7).

Hernandez had a great start to his promotional tenure, KO’ing current no. 4 ranked Beneil Dariush in a mere 42 seconds prior to handily out-grappling BJJ black belt and PFL lightweight champion Olivier Aubin-Mercier. He then went 3-5 over his next eight, being finished in four of those defeats, before coming into this bout off a victory over the winningest fighter in UFC history Jim Miller up at 155 lbs.

Algeo on the other hand came in having gone 3-1 over his last four, the lone defeat coming via controversial split decision to Andre Fili.

Official Result: Bill Algeo def. Alexander Hernandez via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Algeo is able to dictate the center of the octagon, as well as the pace of the fight throughout the opening round using his wide array of kicks. Hernandez steps in to land a nice right hand before getting sat down momentarily with a nice side kick thrown by Algeo shortly thereafter.

Hernandez starts to find his range in the second, landing good crosses to the body of Algeo before going upstairs. He snaps Algeo’s head back with a nasty right hand midway through the round, before being dropped with a left hook. Hernandez returns right to his feet and begins pressing Algeo into the fence; though he’s unable to secure the takedown, he has a strong finish to the round.

Both men come out in the third and final round with a sense of urgency, Algeo winning the earlier exchanges. Hernandez begins to land the heavier and more frequent shots as the round goes on and comes to a close, though Algeo secures the lone takedown of the fight with about five seconds left on the clock.

This fight was closer than the scorecards may suggest. No less, Bill Algeo looked great tonight in this performance over Alex Hernandez at UFC Vegas 80.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
