Floyd Mayweather says Rizin fight is back on
Floyd Mayweather recently shocked the world. Mayweather flew to Tokyo where it was announced he would fight for the Japanese promotion known as Rizin. The fight would be an exhibition bout where it was expected he would take on Tenshin Nasukawa. The fight was set to take place on New Year’s Eve.
However, following the press conference in which the fight was announced, Mayweather called the fight off. Once Mayweather got back home, he released a statement. The statement called off the fight saying he never agreed to a fight with Nasukawa and never agreed for the fight to be shown on pay-per-view.
“I went over there, it happened to be a huge press conference,” Mayweather told TMZ. “So then, of course, I didn’t want to throw a lot of my people under the bus. So, I basically told them, this is not gonna work out.”
However, since then, Mayweather was speaking to TMZ, where he announced the fight may indeed happen after all.
“We’re gonna make it happen,” Mayweather added. “So like I said before, it’s a no-brainer. Just because I’m retired from boxing, people don’t think that I can still go out — I still make appearances worldwide and still make a ton of money. It’s not like I’m 60 or 70-years-old. Even if I’m 60 or 70-years-old, I’m still gonna have the same lifestyle. Why? Smart investments.”
Many believe the only reason Mayweather was supposed to fight was because he needed money. Ultimately, that is not the reason according to Mayweather, rather he just wants to fight.
“Everybody talking about I’m fighting a small guy,” he said. “People don’t understand. Even when people are like, ‘Floyd fights because he needs money.’ It’s more like this: Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Oprah, they still go out there and do different things and get paid financially great. Like I’ve said before, I’m far from hurting for money. I got a ton of money.”
Now, if the fight does indeed happen, the rules are something that needs to be sorted out. Would it be an MMA fight, in which, Mayweather has shown interest in doing MMA? Or, perhaps, it may be a kickboxing fight where Nasukawa might be the best on the planet. According to Mayweather, neither of those are options. If Rizin wants him to fight, it will be on Mayweather’s terms, so that means a boxing fight.
“It’s gonna be a little boxing exhibition,” Mayweather said. “No kicking at all. I’m moving around with the guy for nine minutes. And of course, it’s gonna be the highest paid exhibition ever.”
Ultimately, not bout agreement is signed, so it is all talk right now. No one truly knows if the fight will indeed happen or if this is more talk from Mayweather.
