Julian Erosa edges split decision over Steven Peterson at UFC Vegas 47

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, February 5, 2022 for UFC Vegas 47, headlined by middleweight contenders Jack Hermansson and Sean Strickland.

Co-headlining the event is also a middleweight contest, this one between rising prospects Puna Soriano and Nick Maximov.

Opening up the main card tonight was a featherweight (Peterson missed weight) bout between Julian Erosa and Steven Peterson, both of which are 2-1 in their last three coming in.

Official Result: Julian Erosa def. Steven Peterson via split decision (28-29, 29-28, 29-28)

Erosa is using his elusive movement well early on, as the two trade leg kicks throughout the first round. It appears Erosa has the advantage with the boxing, using his long, rangy arms, while evading Peterson’s punches.

Peterson starts to find his range and land some hard shots throughout the first two minutes of the second, before hurting Erosa badly with a combination midway through. Peterson absolutely unloads on Erosa, drops him, and comes very close to finishing the fight.

Erosa is so durable though, and in the middle of the onslaught, throws and lands a vicious spinning back elbow that rattles Peterson backward. The remainder of the second was spent with the two trading blows, trying their damndest to knock the other out.

That goes for the third round as well, both men laid it all out there and kept going for the finish no matter what.

This was a very wild and violent encounter to open up the main card!

Neither man got robbed tonight, this fight really could have went either way. Both parties hurt the other many times, and it’s a shame one had to lose. It’ll be hard to rival this for Fight of the Night tonight that’s for sure.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
