Curtis Blaydes stops Tom Aspinall early, second straight UFC main event ends via injury at UFC London

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us today, July 23, 2022, for UFC Fight Night 208, going down live from the o2 Arena in London, England.

Headlining the event is a heavyweight clash of contenders between no. 4 Curtis Blaydes (16-3) and no. 6 Tom Aspinall (12-2), and co-headlining is a middleweight contest between Jack Hermansson (22-7) and Chris Curtis (29-8).

Reverting back to our main event:

Blaydes came into the bout on a two-fight win streak, he’s the most prolific takedown artist in heavyweight history by far, and he’s only ever lost to UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou (twice) and no. 5 ranked Derrick Lewis, while Aspinall comes into the bout having gone 5-0 thus far into his UFC career, all five wins via finish.

Official Result: Curtis Blaydes def. Tom Aspinall via TKO (knee injury) at :15 of round one

Blaydes lands two hard right hands right out of the gate, but it doesn’t deter Aspinall, who continues walking him down throwing shots. He lands a beautiful leg kick but gets countered with two more shots and as soon as he steps back, his leg gives out.

Aspinall was looking sharp offensively, but defensively his game didn’t appear to be there.

Though this fight was very, very short, and the outcome is unfortunate, somewhat controversial, this was a telling fight, even with as short as it was.

Aspinall came out hot and got tagged up a good amount.

There were two separate instances in this sub-20 second fight where Blaydes landed hard combinations on Aspinall.

Nonetheless, this is Curtis Blaydes’ third win in a row, as he ends Aspinall’s record-breaking streak in this victory at UFC London.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
