Dustin Poirier “heartbroken” after getting stopped by Charles Oliveira in UFC 269 title fight

UFC lightweight contender Dustin Poirier says he is “heartbroken” after getting stopped by Charles Oliveira in their UFC 269 title fight.

Poirier was coming off of back-to-back knockout wins over Conor McGregor earlier this year to get this title opportunity against Oliveira. Since Poirier was coming into the fight off of two big wins over McGregor, he was the betting favorite to beat Oliveira according to the oddsmakers. But the fight did not play out the way the odds suggested, as it was Oliveira who shocked the world and beat Poirier instead.

After surviving an early knockdown in the first round, Oliveira was able to storm back against Poirier and get him down to the ground in the second. Although Poirier did well to defend submissions in the second round, the third round was more of the same as Oliveira took Poirier down. Only this time, Oliveira was able to get Poirier’s back and tap him out for one of the biggest wins of his MMA career.

For Poirier, though, this was a tough loss. He failed in his last bid to become the UFC lightweight champion to Khabib Nurmagomedov, and now he lost again to Oliveira. Speaking to the media following UFC 269, Poirier admitted that he is “heartbroken” by losing his title opportunity to Oliveira at UFC 269.

“It sucks, man, you know? I worked hard to get back here and fight for another world title. I got choked out again. I’m just heartbroken, really,” Poirier said (via MMAjunkie.com).

“(Oliveira) is good, man. He’s the champ. There’s such a small room for error in these fights. I felt good. After the first round, sitting on my stool, going into the second, drinking water and thinking, ‘I’m going to be the world champion tonight,’ it’s just such a crazy thing that we do.”

What do you think is next for Dustin Poirier after getting stopped by Charles Oliveira at UFC 269?
