Maurice Greene submits Gian Villante in crazy final round

Maurice Greene announces UFC release: “This game is unforgiving”

Former UFC heavyweight Maurice Greene announced on Tuesday that he has been released from the leading MMA promotion’s fighter roster.

Greene lost a unanimous decision against Marcos Rogerio de Lima at this past Saturday’s UFC Vegas 26 event. Just three days later and he has received his pink slip as “The Crochet Boss” took to his social media to officially confirm his release.

When one door closes another one opens. I have had ups and downs with the #ufc and today that relationship comes to an end. Look at the bright side I’m still in the best shape of my life. I’m physically and mentally #stronger than ever and the next chapter I am excited for. This game is unforgiving but hey I’m down for the challenge of making my name with a new promotion or the road back. The best is yet to come #TheCrochetBoss

Greene (9-6) joined the UFC in 2018 and overall he went 4-4 during his Octagon tenure. The 34-year-old Greene picked up stoppage wins over Gian Villante, Junior Albini, and Michel Batista, plus a split decision win over Jeff Hughes. He also lost to the aforementioned de Lima, Greg Hardy, Aleksei Oleinik, and Sergei Pavlovich. Overall he has not lived up to his potential as he opened up his UFC career with three straight wins before losing four of his last five fights. The UFC is always looking to trim the roster as it is constantly signing new fighters and unfortunately for Greene, his number came up as a cut after he had a bad showing against de Lima. That being said, he’s still a big heavyweight with power and submissions, so it seems likely that he will find another home with another promotion.

What do you think is next for Maurice Greene after being released by the UFC?
