Pedro Munhoz plans to make Aljamain Sterling pay for PED comments

Pedro Munhoz tests positive for COVID-19, out against Frankie Edgar on UFC’s July 15 event

Add Pedro Munhoz to the list of fighters to test positive for COVID-19.

The 33-year-old is forced out of his bantamweight bout with Frankie Edgar on “Fight Island,” July 15. 

First reported by MMA Fusion, Munhoz tested positive for the coronavirus before the charter flight from Las Vegas, Nevada to Yas Island, Abu Dhabi today, Monday, July 6. ESPN was the first to confirm the news. 

According to ESPN, Edgar is awaiting a replacement to face in his bantamweight debut.

Munhoz is the fourth fighter to be pulled from a“Fight island” event due to COVID-19, joining Gilbert Burns, Anderson dos Santos and Vinicius Moreira. Moreira and dos Santos were both on the July 15 card with Munhoz. 

A women’s strawweight matchup between Carla Esparza and Marina Rodriguez was also removed from the card after one of Rodriguez’s corners tested positive for the virus. The bout was rescheduled for UFC’s event in Abu Dhabi on July 25

Pedro Munhoz last fought a year ago, dropping a unanimous decision loss to Aljamain Sterling at UFC 238 in June 2019. The loss ended a three-fight unbeaten streak with wins over Cody Garbrandt, Bryan Caraway and Brett Johns. 

Edgar’s 135-debut is currently on hold. The former UFC lightweight champion made the move after suffering back-to-back losses to Max Holloway and Chan Sung Jung in 2019.
