Official Result: Ryan Spann def. Ion Cutelaba via submission (guillotine choke) at 2:22 of round one

Both men start out the bout patiently circling each other, until Spann backs Cutelaba up with a combination that stuns him. Cutelaba then quickly secures a beautiful trip takedown and immediately takes mount.

However, Spann is able to get back to his feet, and threatens with a guillotine choke on the way up.

Spann is trying to land more punches, but Cutelaba doesn’t give him a chance and puts him onto his back once again.

Cutelaba lands some shots to the downed Spann, and lands some shots when Spann gets up again, but he’s unable to remain in a controlling position. He shoots on another takedown, where Spann again attacks the guillotine, but Cutelaba’s defense is working thus far.

Just as we’re thinking that though, as Cutelaba is sprawled out attempting a takedown, Spann locks up a standing guillotine and forces Cutelaba to his back with it.

A few seconds later and Spann got the tap, securing the 12th submission victory of his career.

Ryan Spann is now 20-7 as a professional (6-2 UFC) with this impressive victory over a difficult opponent in Ion Cutelaba. At 30 years old, turning 31 in August, it appears Mr. Spann is really coming into his own.

Who would you like to see him face next?

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
