UEFA Europa League: Why It Is So Competitive

UEFA Europa League: What Makes the Tournament So Competitive

The Europa League is designed to allow smaller clubs to compete against stronger established clubs in Europe. However, in recent years it has become clear that experience does not automatically prevent a structured club from progressing. Pressure is also placed on clubs prior to the knockout rounds in this competition.

How the League Phase Raises the Stakes

In the League competition, there is pressure on the clubs prior to the knockout rounds. 36 clubs will participate in the competition for the 2026/27 season. Each club will play 4 home and 4 away fixtures against 8 different clubs. Fixtures for the Europa League betting (Estonian: UEFA Euroopa Liiga) can be viewed by date on the football section of the site. Information on odds and betting markets is available for each fixture. Data on results, statistics and previous betting can also be viewed individually.

Unlike in the previous system, each club will play two clubs from each of the seeding pots rather than repeating fixtures against the same three clubs. This means a bad draw can cause issues prior to the first fixture.

Fixtures lead to one of the following results:

  • Top 8 finish – progression to the round of 16
  • 9th to 24th finish – progression to the knockout playoffs
  • Below 25th – elimination from competition

If two clubs have equal points, then goal difference will also be taken into account. A huge defeat may not prevent progression but may have detrimental effects.

Why Club Reputation Can Be Misleading

A famous club does not always overcome a less moneyed club. Many domestic champions of smaller competitions have vast experience in qualifying for Europe and use playing styles not typically utilised by the strongest clubs in the largest domestic competitions.

Football outcomes are not analysed in the same way as casino games. There is a casino slot game (Estonian: Sugar Rush Slotimäng) available in the dedicated section and can be played for free. The game is played on a 7×7 grid, and information is available regarding the multiplier system used in the game. The outcomes of the multipliers are random, whereas in football performance is influenced by tactics, player fitness, preparation and other factors.

An instance that stands out is that in April 2025 Bodø/Glimt (from Norway) overcame Lazio in the quarter-finals of the Europa League after a 3-3 aggregate draw and a 3-2 penalty shootout.

This saw Bodø/Glimt progress to the semi-finals and meant that they became the first Norwegian club to progress to the semi-finals in a major UEFA men’s club competition. This was also somewhat against the odds set out by the strength of the domestic competition they played in.

The Demands of the 2026/27 Calendar

The current league phase includes Juventus, Milan, Benfica, Celtic and clubs from considerably smaller football markets. UEFA held the draw on 28 August 2026, with the opening fixtures taking place in September.

Key Dates in the Competition

European games are often sandwiched between tough league games. The short turnaround can affect team selection, particularly following long trips.

Stage Dates
Matchday 3 22 October 2026
Matchday 4 5 November 2026
Final league-phase round 28 January 2027
Knockout play-offs 18 and 25 February 2027
Final in Frankfurt 26 May 2027

A club competing for its domestic title may rest several regular starters before an important weekend fixture. Another might use its strongest available team because European qualification is its main remaining objective.

Such choices can make all the difference between two full-strength sides that are unexpectedly evenly matched.

Knockout Matches Reward Tactical Flexibility

For 9th to 24th placed teams, knockout play-offs must also be cleared. There is the use of two-leg tournaments allowing tactical alterations; however, mistakes in either one of these can be disastrous.

The following points should stand out:

  1. Home and away – some teams can transform when playing away.
  2. Player availability – Injuries and red cards can impact both legs.
  3. Defensive qualities – Protecting a small advantage can make a large difference.
  4. Dead balls – Free kicks and corners can be instrumental in deciding tight matches.

In the second leg, a team behind by one goal may decide to push their full backs into the attack. This enables more attacking play but also creates space for counterattacks.

What the Tournament Means for Estonia

In August 2021, Flora played the first leg of a qualifier for the UEFA Europa League against Omonia and won the match 2-1 (in). Flora then, however, lost the penalties to Omonia 5-4. Following this loss, Flora were relegated to the UEFA Conference League play-off rounds. Flora then went on to beat Shamrock Rovers on aggregate 5-2 and earned themselves a place in the Group Stage.

In addition to the competition itself, the Europa League also offers an additional path to the Champions League. Should a team win the Europa League, they will gain a spot in the next Champions League league phase provided one is not already available in their domestic competition.

This competition can also offer a path into Europe’s top club competition for clubs not already guaranteed a spot in the Champions League within their domestic competition. For this reason, the competition maintains a high level of intensity throughout the knockout stages.
