Ian Garry remains undefeated with victory over Geoff Neal at UFC 298

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to us tonight, February 17, 2024, for UFC 298, going down live from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Headlining the event is a featherweight championship bout between Alexander Volkanovski (26-3) and no. 3 ranked Ilia Topuria (14-0).

Co-headlining the event is a 185 lb encounter between no. 3 ranked former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker (24-7) and no. 6 ranked former title challenger Paulo Costa (14-2).

Our feature fight of the evening came at 170 lbs between no. 8 ranked welterweight contender Geoff Neal (15-6) and no. 10 ranked Ian Garry (14-0).

Geoff Neal, the only man to ever knock out both Mike Perry and Vicente Luque, came into tonight’s bout off a defeat to no. 3 ranked Shavkat Rakhmonov, while former Cage Warriors champion Ian Garry had gone a perfect 5-0 thus far into his promotional tenure.

Official Result: Ian Garry def. Geoff Neal via split decision (30-27, 28-29, 30-27)

Neal lands a good inside leg kick to begin the bout, controlling the center of the octagon while Garry counters and stays on his bike. Neal backs him up with a heavy three-punch combination, landing a vicious shot in the exchange, where he pressed Garry into the fence following.

Garry separated soon after and started to put his attack together on the feet, land an array of effective kicks, straight punches, and his step in knee.

Neal spent a good amount of time in the second pressing Garry into the fence, while Garry continued to out-strike him at range.

Though Neal landed a few good shots in the third and final round, he was ultimately picked apart at range. Garry landed that step-in knee of his again perfectly, and immediately following landed an equally as vicious body kick.

This wasn’t the fight fans hoped for, but Ian Garry remains undefeated tonight at UFC 298, and it appears he’ll be inside of the top 10 rankings come Monday.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
