Irene Aldana storms through Yana Kunitskaya at UFC 264

Irene Aldana comes up big at UFC 264

The score will finally be settled when former interim UFC lightweight champion Dustin Poirier meets former UFC & Cage Warriors champ-champ Conor McGregor for the third time tonight, Saturday, July 10, 2021, at UFC 264.

A pair of top five welterweights, Gilbert Burns and Stephen Thompson, clash in the co-main event inside a sold-out T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Tonight’s feature bout came in the heavyweight division between promising prospects Greg Hardy and Tai Tuivasa.

The second bout on the main card, following ‘Sugar’ Sean O’Malley’s fight, ranked women’s bantamweights Irene Aldana and Yana Kunitskaya went to battle in a three round affair.

Aldana has done quite well as of late, going 5-1 in her last six, while Kunitskaya is 4-1 in her last five after losing to Cris Cyborg at 145 lbs.

Official Result: Irene Aldana def. Yana Kunitskaya via TKO (punches) at 4:35 of round one

Round 1

Kunitskaya comes out and lands a hard leg kick right at the start, before getting more of her kicks going.

It was appearing that perhaps Kunitskaya was going to overwhelm Aldana with her clinches and kicks, it seemed like the perfect remedy for Aldana’s boxing. However, about two minutes in is all it took for Aldana to find her range.

She lands some nice combos as Kunitskaya is walking into them, before landing a thunderous left hook that dropped the Russian talent. Aldana follows up with some very accurate ground-and-pound, and before too long, it was stopped toward the end of round one.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
