Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones Set to Finally Put Rivalry to Bed at UFC 214

Jon Jones says he has nothing to prove against Daniel Cormier

If Daniel Cormier does indeed have one fight left, many are hoping he fights Jon Jones for the third time. The two have arguably the biggest rivalry in all of MMA and have gone back and forth for years.

The two first fought at UFC 182 where Jones defended his light heavyweight title by beating Cormier by unanimous decision. Jones and Cormier then fought again at UFC 214 where Jones originally won the fight by head kick KO, but it was overturned to a no-contest after Jones tested positive.

Since then, Cormier became the light heavyweight champion and then the heavyweight champion. While after vacating Cormier vacated the title, Jones reclaimed the light heavyweight belt at UFC 232. Now, many are hoping Jones and Cormier fight again, but this time at heavyweight. Well, speaking to LA Times, Jones said for that to happen the UFC will have to make it worthwhile in the money aspect.

“If the fans want to see it [at heavyweight] bad enough, the UFC will make it happen for me financially,” Jones said. “If they don’t, it will always be something that’s coulda-shoulda-woulda. Sending me against one of the best fighters ever, and making me sacrifice being smaller than him, they have to make it make sense financially.

“Because, at 2-0 against him, I have nothing to prove. The pressure’s on Daniel. I’m the GOAT of this generation. He knows it. And the fans know that.”

Know for sure, Jones first has to get past Anthony Smith at UFC 235. While for Cormier to make this happen, he will have to prolong his retirement even longer than anticipated. He had hoped to retire before his 40th birthday. As well, Cormier is still chasing the Brock Lesnar fight, but the trilogy fight with Jones may very well be the biggest fight out there.
