Kanyon Tackett

Kanyon Tackett becomes double champ at BCM Promotions: Fight Night 14

BCM Promotions: Fight Night 14 was dubbed “Night of Champions”, and the main event featured a champ vs. champ showdown.

Kanyon Tackett (5-1) came in as the reigning featherweight champion, as he stepped up in weight to take on lightweight champion Mark Antonelli (6-2). The Wolverine MMA fighter Tackett may have given up size in the fight against Ronin Training Center’s Antonelli, but he still forced the action and was the aggressor for the entire fight.

The fight looked like it may have been over as quickly as it started, as Tackett rushed in for a takedown against the cage while Antonelli immediately grabbed a guillotine choke. Tackett landed a big slam and worked his way out of the choke on the ground. Tackett eventually took Antonelli’s back in a scramble, but the first round ended without a finish.

The beginning of the second round was a near carbon copy of the first, with Tackett rushing for the takedown and Antonelli grabbing his neck. They made their way to the ground again, and this time Tackett was able to scramble into a dominant rear naked choke position with more time to work. He eventually locked in the choke and forced the tap at 1:39 of round two.

The win was the third in a row for Tackett, who now has four wins via submission on his record.

The vacant BCM welterweight title was on the line in the co-main event, and it was Hunter Watt (8-1) who was able to come home victorious over Byron Norwood (4-4) with a unanimous decision.

The first round was fairly even until Watt took Norwood’s back in the final few seconds, but the Route 250 Martial Arts product was unable to get the finish before the bell. Watt took full control in the second round, as the end appeared close on a couple of rear naked choke attempts, but the Strong Style Fight Team product Norwood was able to survive. Watt controlled the entire third round as well, eventually making it to the judges’ scorecards. He earned a unanimous decision with scores of 29-28, 30-27, and 29-28.

Watt has now won back-to-back fights after suffering his only defeat, and half of his wins are via decision.

Veteran fighter Nick Walls (7-6) earned the fourth submission of his career, as he stopped Braden Liggett (7-5) with a triangle choke in the third round. Walls appeared near a finish early in the first round, as he landed a beautiful two-punch combo that dropped Liggett. Liggett was able to survive, but a big cut was opened over his left eye. Walls transitioned to grappling in the second round, nearly locking in a triangle that Liggett also survived. Liggett wasn’t able to survive another triangle choke in the third round, however, as Walls cinched it in tight to earn the submission victory.
