Max Holloway sleeps Chan Sung Jung with nasty overhand right in UFC Singapore main event, Korean Zombie retires

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to us today, August 26, 2023, for UFC Singapore, going down live from the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore.

Headlining the event was a 145 lb affair between former UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway (25-7) and former two-time title challenger Chan Sung Jung (17-8).

Holloway came into the bout off a win over no. 4 ranked Arnold Allen following a 2-3 span over his previous five outings, all three defeats coming to current champion Alexander Volkanovski, while Jung came in off a defeat to Volkanovski in his second title shot last year in April.

Official Result: Max Holloway def. Chan Sung Jung via KO (punch) at :23 of round three

Both men look good through the opening round; Jung backs Holloway up with a nasty combination early that momentarily wobbles him, before Holloway gets it back with a combination of his own. Each of them lands a few left hooks, and Jung has a good finish to round one.

Holloway has a strong round two, dropping Jung with a nice right hand in the first minute before immediately jumping on an anaconda choke. He comes very close to finishing the fight via submission but is unable to and they return to their feet.

Jung continues to land good shots of his own on the feet, though he’s unable to get out of the way of shots being returned by the former champion.

Jung opens up the third round with a furious pace, throwing and landing a number of heavy punches. However, he leaves himself open for a beautifully timed and placed overhand right by Holloway and that was all she wrote.

Max Holloway defeats The Korean Zombie in a featherweight legends bout today at UFC Singapore. Now that Holloway has fought Chan Sung Jung, Chad Mendes is the only elite featherweight of his time that he hasn’t fought.

Now that Jung has retired, it’s unfortunate that we didn’t get more out of his career.

Debuting in the WEC with a record of 10-1 back in 2010, we only got 13 fights out of him since then. With a near four-year layoff from 2013 to 2017, as well as a near two-year absence and three yearlong breaks, it’s too bad we didn’t get to see more of his incredible performances.

The Korean Zombie has been a fan favorite ever since his WEC debut against Leonard Garcia, one of the more unforgettable fights ever. He KO’d 22-0 professional kickboxer and former title challenger Mark Hominick back in 2011 before submitting Dustin Poirier (D’Arce choke), becoming the first man to ever finish ‘The Diamond’.

Jung would go on to defeat Dennis Bermudez (KO) in his first return bout, before defeating the likes of Renato Moicano (TKO), former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar (TKO), and ranked featherweight contender Dan Ige (UD) in his most recent victory.

Thank you Chan Sung Jung, your career was always incredibly fun to watch.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
