Ryan Deakin details helping Justin Gaethje train for Khabib Nurmagomedov
Ryan Deakin is a name that might not jump out to most MMA fans. However, if you’re a fan of wrestling then you’ve probably heard of him.
Deakin is currently a redshirt senior on the Northwestern wrestling team. Last season, he posted a perfect 21-0, won the Big Ten Championship at 157 pounds and earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament. Unfortunately for Deakin, the NCAA tournament was canceled due to the global coronavirus pandemic.
Following the school year at Northwestern, Deakin headed back to his home state of Colorado and was looking for training and he found it at the Grudge Training Center. While he was there he became one of Justin Gaethje’s main training partner. Deakin’s role was to wrestle with Gaethje and help him prepare for his upcoming title unification bout with Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Deakin spoke with MyMMANews and detailed what it was like to help prepare Gaethje for the biggest fight of his life. Aside from Gaethje going inside the training camp, Deakin also talked about his upcoming wrestling season and what the future as in store for him.
