Jared Cannonier batters Marvin Vettori in UFC Vegas 75 five-round main event
The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to us tonight, June 17, 2023, for UFC on ESPN 47, going down live from the UFC Apex in Enterprise, Nevada.
Headlining the event was a middleweight encounter between a pair of former title challengers in no. 3 ranked Marvin Vettori (19-7-1) and no. 4 ranked Jared Cannonier (17-6).
Each man came into tonight’s main event having won their last fight, Vettori’s over no. 9 ranked Roman Dolidze (UD), and Cannonier’s over no. 7 ranked Sean Strickland (SD), both of which were somewhat of controversial outcomes.
What’s more, Vettori had gone 7-2 since 2019, only losing to current champion Israel Adesanya (UD) and former champion Robert Whittaker (UD), while Cannonier had gone 6-2 since dropping down to 185 lbs in 2018, also only losing to Adesanya (UD) and Whittaker (UD).

Official Result: Jared Cannonier def. Marvin Vettori via unanimous decision (49-45, 49-45, 48-46)
Cannonier lands a heavy leg kick to begin the bout that buckles Vettori’s leg, and he starts to try and bully his way into striking range. Vettori lands a left hand that stuns Cannonier and continues to land that left with ease throughout the opening five minutes, though Cannonier landed some good right hands of his own.
Cannonier finds his range and absolutely tees off on Vettori in the second.
It’s incredible the damage Vettori took on the feet, as well as on the mat while he was on bottom. Cannonier beat him senseless in the second. And that’s why Vettori has never been stopped through his six defeats, he’s incredibly durable. He just ate all Cannonier’s best shots, who used to knock heavyweights out.
That had to be a 10-8 round for Cannonier.
Vettori continues getting his face battered through the third round, though he gave up a little more offense.
Cannonier has landed over 200 significant strikes through the first 20 minutes, which is nearly twice as many as his no. 3 ranked counterpart. Vettori is still landing good shots of his own, but he’s just getting beat up.
Cannonier’s pace and explosiveness was there the entire 25 minutes tonight; his fifth round was also very dominant, as he nearly stopped Vettori once again, much like in the second. That also could’ve been a 10-8 round.
It’s like Vettori never quite recovered from that second round and it was Cannonier’s fight from there on after he probably won the first.
Jared Cannonier improves his streak to two-straight with victory over Marvin Vettori at UFC Vegas 75.
