Ronda Rousey’s ‘Cyborg’ comments stir up $5,000 bounty
Several years ago, the UFC held a fighter’s summit in which they told their fighters that they wanted them to get in on the social media fad. The organization even began handing out bonuses for creative tweets that would drum up interaction and interest among fans; the purpose……free marketing and promotion of not only the fighters, but also the UFC brand.
This methodology while good at time, has also been the downfall of many a fighter. Enter fighters like Matt Brown, Miguel Torres, Matt Mitrione, and others.
The biggest name at the top of the list is most likely the most recognizable and popular fighter currently on the UFC roster….and she has yet to be reprimanded.
During an interview with Yahoo Sports last week Rousey called former Strikeforce champion Cris Cyborg an “It,” stating that she is no longer a woman due to steroid use.
“I’ve said before, I don’t care if she’s injecting horse semen into her eyeballs, I’ll fight her, but that’s just my personal decision,” Rousey said. “But I can’t make a decision for the whole division. I can’t say it’s the right thing. This girl has been on steroids for so long and [has been] injecting herself for so long that she’s not even a woman anymore. She’s an ‘it.’ It’s not good for the women’s division. It’s not good at all.
While it is hypocritical for the UFC to punish some athletes and not others, putting a bounty on one’s head may be just as unprofessional, but that is exactly what the MMA clothing line Americana MMA did.
Americana MMA have sided themselves against the comments that Rousey and have offered a $5,000 prize to the first fighter that knocks the UFC women’s bantamweight champion out.
Even though their tweets are just as controversial Americana MMA is gaining speed. New followers are flocking to their social media sites and as the story makes headlines the UFC may come under pressure to act towards doling out a punishment towards Rousey.
It looks like the first female fighter who will have the opportunity to legally knock Rousey out will be Alexis Davis on July 5, as the number one contender looks to take the title away from the waist of the Olympian at UFC 175.
