Jon Jones, UFC 232

Chael Sonnen Says Time Is Running Out On Jon Jones

Chael Sonnen says the clock is ticking for Jon Jones.

Jon Jones is recognized by many as the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world. While Daniel Cormier holds that spot on the official UFC rankings, his position has been disputed as Jones holds a victory over “DC.” “Bones” would be 2-0 against Cormier if it wasn’t for his positive UFC 214 drug test for turinabol. Jones still views himself as having two wins over Cormier as he says the picograms in his system weren’t enough to enhance performance.

As good as Jones may be inside the Octagon, everyone’s time in the spotlight wraps up. In a video posted on his YouTube channel, Sonnen said Jones’ time is coming quicker than many are anticipating (via BJPenn.com).

“Over time he’s going to have to move weight class if he wants to be remembered…He needs to expand, he needs to show on some level that he can go out there and compete with (Daniel) Cormier clean,” Sonnen said.

Sonnen went on to say that Jones could very well find himself fighting for relevancy in just a few short years.

“I don’t think he realizes how quick that clock is winding down. He will not be the world champion at 35 years old. He absolutely will not be. He likely, will not even be the main event or co-main event by 36 years old. By 37 years old, he will be fighting for his place in the sport. That’s just the way it goes.”
