John Cook, MMA fighter and coach, passes away from colon cancer

Another sad day in the mixed martial arts community as we learn that John Cook, 53, has passed away after a five-year battle with colon cancer.

Social media posts in support of the Cook family, including his wife and FOX 8 News anchor Tracy McCool, began to pour in on Tuesday.

Through chemo and surgeries, John maintained his fighter mentality, with the three loves of his life by his side: his daughter Cassidy, son Carter, and wife Tracy, according to an article from the above mentioned news site.

“There has been some good that’s come from [cancer],” John said about a year after his diagnosis. “I think I’ve become a little bit more humble. I have value in other things, the important things, like the time I spend with my kids and the time I spend with my wife.”

Tracy McCool posted on Facebook last month that her husband had been accepted to a clinical trial at University Hospitals.

“PEACE BE STILL MY LOVE! Fly high in heaven!” she posted on Facebook early Wednesday morning.

Cook, who fought under the moniker “Silverback” was 2-0 as an amateur mixed martial artist. His fights took place under the North American Allied Fight Series in 2010 and 2011. He also coached at Evolve MMA in Medina< Ohio.

RIP John
