Omar El Dafrawy aims to becomes new face of the fight game at PFL MENA
Omar El Dafrawy has taken the road less traveled in mixed martial arts, having a multiple fight winning streak immediately followed by a losing streak, it was easy to write him off, he just wasn’t going to listen. His current winning streak stands at four, three of which have come by knockout and hasn’t seen him enter the third round. A veteran in the fight game with 16 fights to his resume, he has never let his confidence fall and his belief that he will be world champion remains.
Speaking to the media ahead of his PFL MENA debut on July 12 when he’ll take on Anthony Zeidam. El Dafrawy discussed his determination to become champion and etch his name in the fight game, what it means to silence the critics and more. For El Dafrawy, he understands where he’s been at in his career and the feeling of no pressure because he’s been overlooked, is a freeing feeling.
“I’m not supposed to be in this position according to everyone else. I was at the top and on fire with my winning streak early in my career and then immediately after I had a losing streak and people started to write me off. Now I’m coming in here ready to show the world what I’m truly capable of. They’re starting to take notice again because of my new winning streak.
I was the guy growing up that was the bad guy, no one thought I’d ever get to this place or find any success. That motivates me because I want to prove them all wrong.”
On his Instagram bio, Omar El Dafrawy has the phrase “new face of the fight game” and when asked about that phrase, he said a successful run at PFL. MENA will lead to him changing it.
“When I become the face of the fight game and become a champion, I will take the new out of it. But I am not going to change that until I become a champion. I know I can be a champion, I’ve always believed I can be champion, and I’m going to prove it.”
Omar El Dafrawy will have a tough test in Zeidam, but the 29-year old former AUFC champion has bigger goals than just continuing hsi winning streak. He wants wins, but he also wants success at PFL MENA, he wants to represent Egypt as a world champion, and he wants to be a household name in mixed martial arts.
