Advantages of growing regular marijuana seeds
Whether you are a steady and experienced grower or you are just getting started with marijuana plants, you must have heard about the existence of two different types of seeds; regular seeds and feminized seeds.
Perhaps, if you haven’t yet joined in on this topic, you may be wondering “What is the difference in these seeds?” or “What advantages can one have over the other?”. In what, I hope, you will read below, we explain everything.
What is a regular marijuana seed?
Most Cannabis products out there, work with hybrid seeds, you can find several of these products in Cannabis clubs for tourists and such. But the “regular” marijuana seed is also there for growing.
These seeds are called by many people the “original” or “authentic” seeds. The name given to them is because they are the seeds that the cannabis plant produces naturally and can result in male or female plants.
They are generally discarded by growers who are not interested in hybridization (which is at least 90%) because when male plants are born in the crops, they are uprooted to leave only the females.
What is a feminized marijuana seed?
Unlike regular seeds, these are seeds that only produce genetically female plants. They are obtained by pollinating the flowers of a female plant with the pollen of another female plant. Thus, the plant does not generate any male genes.
This type of seed is beneficial for the commercial approach applied to it, so they are the most used by growers whose only and main objective is to obtain a lot of marijuana of excellent quality.
Importance of regular seeds
Their importance and why they should be given more attention lies in the genetic makeup of these seeds. Even if there is a standard, the seeds are different from each other.
Since they are not sister plants, the selection of genes that can be made is very varied, giving way to the possibility of choosing the genetic traits that you like or suit you (colors, flavors, smells, etc.) and turn them into common characteristics of a newly established variety.
Advantages of regular seeds
With them, you can obtain more resistant female plants. Once you remove the males from the crop, you will get plants strong enough to withstand situations such as a sudden change in photoperiod, lack of water, or excessive fertilization. All this without them showing male traits.
You can make marijuana cuttings. Some growers can keep a mother plant planted from regular seeds for decades.
You might find a genetically intact phenotype, unlike feminized seeds where this is chosen. Imagine in your crop a plant different from others with unique stems, growth patterns, aromas, and flavors.
And speaking of unique plants, using these seeds you can create magnificent hybrids. In the past, breeders would mix strains and see what happened, giving way to never-before-seen varieties.
Last but not least, especially if you are passionate about genetics, thanks to regular seeds you could have access to all those old genetic traits that have never been feminized.
