Carlos Ulberg, UFC St Louis

Carlos Ulberg violently KO’s Alonzo Menifield in 12 seconds at UFC St Louis

The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to us tonight, May 11, 2024 for UFC St Louis, going down live from the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

Headlining the event is a heavyweight bout between the UFC’s all-time knockout leader, no. 12 ranked Derrick Lewis (27-12) and the surging no. 15 ranked Rodrigo Nascimento (11-1).

Co-headlining the event is a welterweight showcase between Joaquin Buckley (18-6) and Nursulton Ruziboev (34-8-2).

Our feature fight of the evening came in the light-heavyweight division between no. 11 ranked Alonzo Menifield (15-4-1) and Carlos Ulberg (10-1).

Menifield, following a 4-3 run across seven fights to begin his promotional tenure, had since gone 4-0-1 with three finishes over his last five going in, while Ulberg, following defeat in his promotional debut, had since won five-straight with four finishes.

Official Result: Carlos Ulberg def. Alonzo Menifield via KO (punch) at :12 of round one

Menifield opened up the bout very aggressively, storming forward with a heavy combination and landing a hard right hand at the start of it. Ulberg immediately circled his way out of danger and landed a nasty right hand that dropped Menifield. He swarmed Menifield with a combination of his own from here, KO’ing him stiff with a left hook in the opening seconds of the bout.

That strategy works for Menifield at times; he is very good at closing the distance with his punches and he’s certainly one of the hardest hitters in the entire division. But, Ulberg went 19-2 across 21 professional kickboxing fights before beginning his MMA career, and it wasn’t anything he hadn’t seen before as he got out of danger and countered perfectly.

Many of us were surprised Carlos Ulberg wasn’t ranked going into this fight, but after picking up the third-fastest finish in UFC light-heavyweight history, and after stopping a ranked opponent that hadn’t lost since 2021, he certainly will be come Monday.

I became a fan of combat sports when I was 12 years old. I was scrolling through the channels and landed upon Versus, where WEC was televised. Urijah Faber fought Jens Pulver for the second time that night. That's the first fight I ever saw, and I was immediately hooked. So eventually, I began covering the sport in the fourth quarter of 2018, and have since started writing about animals as well.
