A career in mixed martial arts (MMA) can be short-lived. A star today can be a low ranking fighter in a few months. MMA has become a loved sport in the past couple of years with rising stars like Conor McGregor taking charge to put the UFC on the spotlight. With fighters like Jon Jones and Anderson Silva, looking to grace the MMA hall of fame after they retire, rising stars are making their way to the top. It is no doubt that big organizations like the UFC and Bellator will set their eyes on the rising talent as they are the future of the sport. In recent years, there have been those fighters in the MMA who have shown great heart and unique skills in their craft. They include:

Khabib Nurmagomedov

He is no newcomer when it comes to MMA. Although he has an undefeated streak in the UFC, he is yet to be issued with a title challenge. The 28 year old Russian boasts of being a good wrestler and also has a black belt in Judo. He is 8-0 in the UFC alone and in his last fight he took apart Michael Johnson after a previous dominating win over Darrell Horcher. However, Nurmagomedov has been dogged by a series of injuries since he signed with the UFC which has kept him from fighting for the title in the lightweight division.

Cody Garbrandt

Garbrandt is like the McGregor of the bantamweight division. He is cocky, confident, tattooed and wins matches, just like Conor. He is good with the microphone and an excellent in the octagon. With his 6 straight wins in the division, the latest one over Dominick Cruz, the 26 year-old, looks to win the title and dominate for a long time.

Alexa Grasso

She has only been in the UFC for less than a year and already a promising fighter. Before she signed with the UFC, the Mexican international, won four fights without much hustle against renowned fighters like Jodie Esquibel. She is just 24 years of age and as a boxer, she is quick and effective with her hands in the cage.

Robert Whittaker

Whittaker, the Australian, has been instrumental as an underdog in the middleweight division. After his last 6 wins in the division one of which he dominated the dangerous 40-year old Yoel Romero he earned a title shot. However, after that last fight with Romero, he suffered an injury. In that case, he has to wait for his title shot a little bit longer against the one who will be champion at the tile. The middleweight is filled with fighters who are more than 30 years old while Whittaker is 26.

Mateusz Gamrot

Gamrot is just 26 years old with a record of 12 wins and no loss. The Poland international has rocked the lightweight division as a promising fighter with his unique skill-set. His ground game is exceptional. Once he takes an opponent down, it is almost a done deal for him. He is able to land punches and elbows while still taking charge to keep the opponent down. With such control and determination to win against any opponent, he is ready for a title match.
