Civilization 7
In the lead-up to the release of Civilization VII, the developers continue to reveal more details about the upcoming 4X game. With the likes of Millennia, Ara: History Untold, and Age of Wonders 4 competing against another title. The new Civilization is looking to stand out in the suddenly vibrant genre. During a recent stream, the developers shared more information about the second of the game’s three eras. They talked about the return of one of the series’ most popular leaders.
Civilization VII takes a slightly different approach to history. Instead of a continuous progression through all the eras of humanity, the game is now divided into three historical periods. Each period has its technologies, civilizations, and mechanics. The Age of Exploration, in the middle, opens up the world to civilizations. It is allowing them to meet, trade, and, of course, fight. This is a time when new resources and goods are available through long-distance travel. Players are encouraged to actively explore the world rather than close themselves off behind their borders.
Also returning is Isabella, Queen of Spain. She was first introduced in Civilization 5. She retains her passion for expanding her influence. Her bonuses are still centered around wonders of the world. Her Seven Cities of Gold ability grants gold for each wonder discovered, especially if it’s located far away. Isabella gains additional resources from Wonder Tiles. She gains more gold when recruiting naval units and has a reduced cost for them.
With her Wonderlust agenda, Isabella is jealous of wonders on the map. If other players own wonders, she will suffer a negative relationship with them. But she will be more friendly if they are missing.
Civilization VII launches on February 11 on PC and all consoles.
Ghost of Yōtei
Sony has confirmed that it will begin releasing major single-player games. It is annually starting in 2025, starting with Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yōtei. The new title will continue the story of the Ghost of Tsushima universe. But this time it will take place 300 years after the original. In Ghost of Yōtei, players will have more control over the story of protagonist Atsu, and the open world will offer unique new experiences.
Sony announced its intention in its latest quarterly report despite forecasts for a decline in revenue for the studio division in the second half of fiscal 2025. However, this is largely due to the success of games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Helldivers 2, which have set a high bar.
The company also noted that despite the failure of its game Concord, work is continuing on Bungie’s Marathon and Haven Studios’ Fairgame$ title. Both games are planned for future releases.
Zephon
While 4X strategy fans are eagerly awaiting the release of Civilization 7, Zephon offers a unique take on the genre. It transports players to a dangerous and dark world where the planet has been reduced to post-apocalyptic ruins after an alien invasion. In the new game from Proxy Studios, the exploration of the earthly continents has been replaced by a fight for survival among Lovecraftian monsters, merciless machines, and hungry mutants.
Proxy Studio has created an atmospheric world. It could be one of the best 4X games of the year. In Zephon, humanity lives through the aftermath of a massive conflict between the alien Akrin race and a mysterious AI named Zephon. It has brought the planet to the brink of extinction. In this horror, survival is no longer just a goal, but a cruel necessity.
Players must rebuild their civilization from scratch. They will be choosing magical or transhumanist methods to increase their chances of victory, or relying on the power of human will. Each leader in the game has unique abilities, and battles take place on a hex grid map similar to Civilization 6. Players can block opponents, launch missile attacks, and even use nuclear weapons or rituals to inflict corruption.
Zephon offers three main development paths: human ingenuity, cybernetics, and technology, or the mystical Voice. The choice of faction and the decisions made during the game allow you to create a unique combination of these ideologies. Proxy Studios has included over 150 technologies to research and over 50 unique units. It presents a world rich in detail and atmosphere.
As players develop their empires, they will face diplomatic challenges. They will be cooperating or clashing with leaders.
Zephon is now available on Steam. The game currently has 92% positive reviews.
