James “Lyonheart” Lyons discusses future, teammates’ upcoming bouts
James “Lyonheart” Lyons has put the regional amateur featherweight division on heavy notice. If you want a scrap, all you have to do is ask. The Stellar Fights featherweight champion, Lyons has looked unstoppable in his past several outings defending his championship. As of late, Lyons dismantled William Mondragon at 1:27 into the opening round via rear naked choke.
“Did I think I was going to get the submission very easy? No, but that’s because on paper he is a purple belt,” Lyons said of his most recent opponent.
“I think he had a bad weight cut. I think it was his first time cutting to 145 (pounds) and I don’t think he recovered right.”
While James “Lyonheart” Lyons himself is a high level purple belt in BJJ, he’s never shy for a standup contest going 2-0 in kickboxing to add to his 6-2 MMA record.
One thing is for certain, Lyons is open for any top featherweight opposition in the near future, stating, “if someone is trying to fight, I’m trying to fight!”
The champ and I had an evening out to dinner and to chop it up, discussing what’s his next step, and to touch on his teammates upcoming bouts as well! Tune in!
