Josiah Reyes: “I feel like all of my energy, finally, is focused on something that feels right”
Once a musician, now a Martial Artist, Josiah Reyes will have his first MMA fight at Southwest MMA Series XXIX.
Making your pro debut on September 28th, how awesome is that?
“I mean it’s been a beautiful journey, so far. The amateur life has been cool. Just been learning every single month, pretty much. Something new to learn every week, I think, and I’m just such a huge fan of the game. I was just telling some of my friends and family, you know. I went to college to teach music actually and I just never felt like anything clicked in terms of just doing all the schoolwork, all the assignments, just never could follow through. I kind of struggled, like pulling teeth basically. And lately studying; MMA and martial arts, Jiu Jitsu, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, I’ve never felt so excited to Immerse myself in something to study. It’s been great I feel like all of my energy finally is focused on something that feels right. It doesn’t feel like work or anything.”
But you had to be dragged to you first Jiu Jitsu class?
“Yeah, I didn’t want to go. It’s hard to get me to try something new. My friend Rachel, she’s actually flying out to see the fight as well, she’s like, ‘just come on, come try, you’ll like it’. And I was like no I’ll do it next week, ‘come on come try it’; She invited me in Sliver City, [NM]. We have this little club, a handful of people doing Jiu Jitsu. I fell in love right away.”
