Jarod Grant on John Dodson “Don’t Really See Him Competing With Me Boxing-Wise”

Jarod Grant and John Dodson test skills in a high-stakes flyweight fight at BKFC KnuckleMania 3 on February 17th.

Grant appeared on Bowks Talking Bouts to discuss the implications of the winner being close to cementing themselves as BKFC’s inaugural male 125-pound champ, the machinations of this matchup, and more. Excerpts from our chat are below.

Grant’s thoughts on Dodson’s BKFC debut that resulted in a sub-one-minute KO

“I mean congrats to him. He did a good job. Got in there, got out of there. I don’t think the guy that he fought put up a lot. I would like to see it go a couple more rounds. See another guy put up an actual fight with him and see how he does.”

“But you know, I was a little disappointed that it didn’t get to go the full five rounds or at least a couple of rounds. So I could collect a little bit more. So I just had to go back to his older fights like in MMA and UFC and stuff; study him that way. But no I mean, for his debut he did good. I’ve got nothing bad to say about him.”

What Dodson’s strong stylistic attributes are in the eyes of Grant

“As far as pure boxing, I don’t really see it. I mean like that’s all I’m around is boxers. I sparred a lot of world champions and I spar just boxers. I’m not really into the whole MMA world. So like he has a lot of flaws with his footwork. He just has that MMA style like that UFC style.”

“But you know as far as what he does well, he’s a fast guy, seems like he has a little bit of power to him. I guess I’ll be the judge of that… But as far as boxing-wise, I don’t really see him competing with me boxing-wise.”

Grant’s aim to regain BKFC bantamweight gold and to also capture a flyweight title in the company

“Oh yeah and I definitely want my rematch like a hundred percent with Reggie (Barnett Jr). Like whether it’s for the belt or not, man, I  definitely want my rematch with him… I didn’t think about it (the flyweight title) until after I’m fighting Dodson now.”

“I do believe that this fight with me and Dodson, winner will get to fight for the (125 lb) title next. So that’s kind of the talk that’s going around. Now I have my eyes set on that. I have my eyes set on the 135 belt and the 125 belt. So now I have my eyes on that.”
