Video: Mark Zuckerberg competing in BJJ

Mark Zuckerberg is one of tech’s most controversial and memed personalities. But after his appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience, Zuckerberg said that he’s taken up Jiu Jitsu and expressed his love for martial arts. Yesterday, footage of his first Jiu Jitsu tournament was released and made waves on the internet.

Mark Zuckerberg: An Affinity for Martial Arts

Zuckerberg looked decent in the video and had a decent guillotine escape. Keep in mind he’s still a white belt essentially. Don’t expect Danaher level Jiu Jitsu from the Facebook founder just yet.

Mark Zuckerberg has taken up martial arts and become a super fan. He follows fighters from the UFC, Bellator and ONE Championship and giving kudos to the fighters he enjoys. Zuckerberg actually watches the sport.

In fact, Mark Zuckerberg rented the APEX out for Mackenzie Dern vs. Xiaonan Yan. Dern is his wife’s favorite fighter and the couple sat ring side to enjoy the show.

Zuckerberg then partnered with the UFC and FightPass to host an LFA event in VR with Meta’s Oculus. The event was quite cool but we haven’t seen another event since then.

Zuckerberg isn’t the only well known person involved in Jiu Jitsu. While he’s the only tech that’s publicly competing, Tom Hardy has been involved and competed in Jiu Jitsu as a purple belt. Jonah Hill also attributes his turnaround of health to Jiu Jitsu.

While many may groan with Zuckerberg involved with mixed martial arts, having a tech billionaire so invested in the sport can reap some benefits for fans.

VR is the future of sports and entertainment, despite how far off it may seem. With Zuckerberg’s interest in building the backbone of the virtual world, MMA could be there from the jump. Love it or hate it, we are rapidly approaching the future of combat sports. It is in VR. Zuckerberg is seeing to it personally.
